Success with First Ever GCSE Exams
We are extremely proud to have a pass rate of 100% for GCSE’s after beginning to offer the qualification just last year.
Four of our young people were entered for the Edexcel Mathematics GCSE and all four have received a pass grade. The news of their GCSE success is particularly admirable as the young people completed the two-year qualification in less than 9 months.
In addition to their GCSE maths, Carly, Dillion, Jack and Callum have achieved a further 3 full level 2 qualifications each, ensuring that they leave Choysez with the qualifications needed to help them move on to college, employment or apprenticeships.
Samantha Bowman, Maths Teacher at Choysez, said ‘These results are brilliant. To achieve a pass at any level in such a short period of time is an outstanding achievement on its own and we are really proud of all our young people for their hard work and dedication during what has been a great year at Choysez. To leave Choysez with the equivalent of 4 GCSE’s is a fantastic result.’
As well as their 100% pass rate at GCSE, this year Choysez students have set a new record for the total amount of awards and qualifications which stands at 428 –an increase of 30% from the previous year. This shows that the young people prosper in the small classroom sizes and nurturing environment that Choysez provides.
Chris Conroy, Centre Manager, said ‘At Choysez the young people are taught by fully qualified teachers in small classes and these results show that this is welcomed and needed by the young people we support. Our investment in professional staff and excellent facilities is evident for everyone to see in these results and we look forward to the year ahead when we add GCSE English to our portfolio of subjects.’
Well done to everyone involved!
Choysez Young People
Some of our young people have enjoyed an eventful trip to Manchester in the summer holidays after successfully applying for the funding themselves.
The group travelled down to Manchester where they met with staff and young people from a similar organization, The Factory Youth Zone. They then all went to Airkix together and took part in an indoor skydive.
One of the young people on the trip said ‘The skydive was so much fun. I’ve never done anything like it before and I wasn’t sure what it would be like but I had a great time.’
The group then took their guests from Manchester out for a meal and found out more about each other, comparing life in Northumberland to life in Manchester.
Finally, the day ended with a tour of the Manchester centre and a Choysez vs. The Factory Youth Zone football match.
The group would like to thank The Factory Youth Zone for joining them for the day and for welcoming them at the centre. Our next exchange visit is now in the planning stage and we can’t wait to go back.
More videos and photos of the trip can be seen in our photo gallery.
Say Goodbye to Olivia
Recently we have said goodbye to one of our student volunteers who did an excellent job in the office helping out with marketing and funding. She leaves us to enter into a graduate scheme and we would like to thank her for all of her hard work and wish her all the best for the future. Before she left she was kind enough to write about the time she spent at Choysez and what it was like to be a volunteer with us.
Olivia said: 'I have seen a different perspective of growing up in a disadvantaged, rural area and I now feel like my eyes have been fully opened to the need for centres such as Choysez.'

Thank You and Well Done!
We would like to say thank you and well done to a former Choysez student who sent us the following message:
'From the age of 12-14 I attended Choysez as a student as I was a troubled teen and I was finding it difficult keeping a placement in mainstream schools. I am now 18 years old and I am inspired by the work you guys do with young people. I got back into mainstream school and managed to achieve 11 GCSEs and then went on to further education. I want to help children that are like how I was and inspire them as you inspired me.'
Turning Over a New Paige
with Positive Choysez!
This is the story of Paige, who came to Choysez and left us with a new attitude and a proud mum.
They were both interviewed on BBC Radio Newcastle and they are a great example of the work we are doing at Choysez- giving young people the chance of a better future. We endeavour to do this with every young person that comes to us and stories like Paige’s give us all the motivation we need in order to keep doing this each and every year.
Thank you Paige and Heidi for your kind words; we wish you the best of luck for the future!
Kielder Residential ProjectWatch More Videos
At Choysez we are able to offer our young people the opportunity to stay overnight in our cottage at the heart of Kielder forest.
Kielder is an important part of the Choysez programme, allowing our young people to learn emotionally and socially as well as intellectually.
It is here that they are able to take a break from their lives and to reflect upon them whilst also learning new skills such as independency which, in turn, improves their self-esteem, and all these great benefits run alongside having fun in the outdoors.

Latest NewsThe Poetry Games
Some of our young people entered another Young Writers competition- The Poetry Games- and Shannon Hemsley has had her poem selected for the January anthology. This means that for each competition our young people have entered we have had a winner- and we think that 2 out of 2 ain’t bad! We’re really proud of Shannon for working so hard on her poem –so proud that we are showing off her poem here on our website:
My Pretty Kitten
My kitten’s so pretty, soft and small, She runs and plays and catches her ball. My kitten’s so clean and neat, After each meal she washes her feet. I love to pat her silky fur, And listen when she starts to purr. Then she takes a nap in the sun, Then the poem’s been done.
